Our recent kindergarten visit to Farmer Brad’s farm was more than just a field trip—it was a full-circle experience rooted in community, education, and a whole lot of heart.
Farmer Brad Meyer, a proud Tinora High School graduate from the Class of 1987, has been farming since 1991. While many in our area know him as a dedicated farmer, he’s also been a longtime friend to schools, opening his farm to Defiance City Schools for educational field trips since 2007. When COVID-19 paused in-person visits, Brad didn’t stop teaching. In collaboration with both Defiance and Tinora, he created a series of virtual farm videos so students could still learn about agriculture from a distance.
After field trips resumed, Tinora joined in the tradition—and we’re so glad we did.
This year, our kindergarteners had the chance to visit Brad’s farm in person. They learned all about the 250 cows he cares for, including Holsteins and Angus-Holstein crosses. Farmer Brad shared insights into daily farm life, how he takes care of the animals, and what it means to be a farmer in our community.
Adding to the sense of tradition and connection, some familiar faces joined us at the farm: retired Tinora Elementary teachers Bill Grimes, Jean Ann Weible, and Margaret Grimes. These beloved educators now help out during the field trips, making the experience even more special for students and staff alike.
We also want to thank Candy Rowland for helping bring Tinora into this amazing partnership. Her support helped open the doors (and barn doors!) to a valuable educational experience that ties into our school’s values of learning through real-life connections.
Thank you, Farmer Brad, for sharing your time, your cows, and your story with us. You’ve not only given our students a memorable day—they've gained a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and the people who make it happen.
We can't wait to come back next year!
