Tinora Awarded AED Grant

Tinora is proud to announce that Athletic Director Jake Essig has successfully secured a grant for a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) through the Play Safe Fund. This initiative was developed by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), Coaches’ Tool Chest, the Cincinnati Bengals, and a private donor. The Play Safe Fund helps schools across Ohio obtain life-saving medical equipment based on demonstrated need.

A Commitment to Student Safety

When asked what inspired him to apply for the grant, Essig emphasized the importance of readiness in every aspect of student life.

“The inherent risks associated with student activities, both within athletics and beyond, prompted my application for this grant,” Essig shared. “By securing additional AEDs for our campus, we can significantly mitigate potential injury and ensure immediate, life-saving assistance is available in the event of an emergency. The presence of more AEDs means quicker response times, which can be crucial in critical situations.”

According to the American Heart Association, the use of an AED in combination with CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival following sudden cardiac arrest. Every minute of delay in defibrillation reduces survival by approximately 10 percent, highlighting how vital it is for schools and athletic facilities to have immediate access to this equipment.

Planning for Maximum Impact

Currently, Tinora has several AEDs available across campus. With this new addition, Essig and the school’s support staff, including the nurse and administration, are determining the most strategic location to ensure maximum accessibility and coverage for all students, staff, and visitors.

“Collaborating closely with our support staff will allow us to identify the optimal placement to maximize accessibility and impact for our student-athletes and the wider school community,” Essig explained.

A Meaningful Milestone for Tinora Athletics

For Essig, the grant represents more than just new equipment. It is a symbol of the school’s commitment to safety and proactive care.

“Receiving this grant represents a profound commitment to the safety and well-being of our students,” he said. “For me personally, it underscores the importance of proactive measures in protecting our young athletes. For our athletic department, it signifies a collective step forward in fostering a culture of preparedness.”

The AED is expected to be operational by the end of November.
