On Friday, December 19th, the Tinora Performing Arts Center welcomed families, teachers, and students for the annual Tinora Middle School Spelling Bee. The top spellers from each grade had spent weeks preparing, studying word lists and practicing, all for the chance to compete on stage.
Each grade level selected its top eight spellers to represent the school, and now these students were ready to take their turns at the microphone. Hosting the event at the PAC gave students a chance to perform in a professional setting and allowed families to watch comfortably. Principal Lisa Maxell says this helps prepare the students for the county bee. “The acoustics are great, and it gives our students experience competing on a stage before they move on to the next level,” she explained.
As the rounds went on, students focused on each word, carefully listening before spelling aloud. When someone misspelled a word, the audience clapped and offered support, creating a positive and encouraging atmosphere. “I really enjoy seeing how willing our students are to try something challenging in front of others and how they support each other along the way,” Principal Lisa Maxwell said.
After several competitive rounds, 5th grader Ava Kehnast spelled the winning word, immigrants, correctly and was named champion. 8th grader Colton Travis earned the runner-up spot. Both students will represent Tinora at the county bee at Ayersville on January 13th at 7 p.m., with the opportunity to advance to the regional level.
A big thank-you goes to Mrs. Emily Fuller, who organized the event this year, and to the judges, Ms. Kari Altstaetter, Ms. Rittenhouse, and Ms. Krukowski, for helping the bee run smoothly.
The Tinora Middle School Spelling Bee is a tradition that celebrates students’ dedication, focus, and perseverance. Beyond spelling, it is a chance for students to build confidence, practice leadership, and encourage one another, making it a meaningful part of the school year.
